Field Trips

Experience the vibrant cities of Germany and enjoy your summer with friends from all over the globe! In addition to all our classes and activities in Giessen, you will participate in two three-day field trips. The first one takes you to Berlin and the second one takes you to Hamburg (both included in the program fee).

Berlin

The first weekend will take us to Berlin. The trip to Germany´s capital city will invite you to have a look behind the scenes of one of the major political institutions in Germany, the German "Bundestag". We will also visit the "Brandenburger Tor" and the remains of the Berlin Wall. Further, we will visit the German establishment of the European Parliament. A city tour by bus will take you to the most important historical attractions and cultural places all over the city. Of course, there will be time to discover Berlin and its countless attractions on your own. On Sunday, before we go back to Giessen, we will visit the city of Potsdam and its well-known Sanssouci Castle.

Hamburg

On our second weekend, we will be visiting Hamburg. The great harbor town has much more to offer than its famous Reeperbahn. On Friday we will be visiting a Patent Office.
On Saturday you will have plenty of time to explore the city on your own.
On our way back to Giessen we will have a guided tour through the concentration camp Neuengamme.

Free Weekend

The third weekend of our program is your free weekend. You might want to take the chance to visit other European countries. Alternatively, we offer an optional day trip to the Rhine River Valley. The River Rhine Valley is one of Germany´s most beautiful landscapes. After hiking and a boat trip on the Rhine River, you will enjoy a wine tasting with some regional German delicacies.

Rhine Valley - optional day trip (August 5th 2017)

The Rhine is a well-known river flowing through the heart of Europe. The Valley around the Rhine is very popular for growing wine. But we will not only experience the beautiful landscape during our trip. You will have some free time to explore the city of Rüdesheim, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. We also planned a boat trip for you, where you will be able to see the famous rock constellation called “Loreley”. Nowadays, the rocks have been adjusted to shipping traffic but in the past many ships capsized at this place. Clemens Brentano a German poet created a mystery around it in one of his peoms. A woman called Loreley, is sitting on the rock and sings with a beautiful voice so that the shipmasters are distracted and crash their ships. Towards the end of the trip, we will taste some local wine during a typical German dinner called “Abendbrot” in English “bread in the evening”.

The trip will take place on August 4th 2018 and is not mandatory. If you want to join us the fee will only be 50 Euro. Rides by bus, the boat trip, the chair lift, as well as wine tasting and dinner are already included in the price.
